Baden Baden, which literally means Bath Bath, is the ultimate European spa destination and the most famous spa town in Germany. Nestled in the Black Forest region of Germany, the spa and wine town of Baden Baden is located in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg, situated approximately 60 km northeast of Strasbourg, France. On the banks of the Oos River, Baden Baden once hosted Roman vapour baths.
Getting There
Baden Baden can be reached by airplane, airport shuttles, regional trains or by car. The Baden Airpark is located 15 km from the city of Baden Baden and offers daily flights to and from Berlin Templehof. Charter flights are also available from many cities via Eurowings, Hapag Lloyd Hamburg International, Air Europa, and Sun Express. Trains also run between Baden Baden and the larger airports at Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, and Basel, Switzerland. Airport shuttles are also available from airports in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Strasburg, France.
Since the Roman Era, Baden Baden has been known for its spas. The two largest spas, Caracalla and the Roman-Irish Friedrichsbad Spa, are relatively inexpensive. A three-hour visit to Caracalla costs about 13 Euros. Children must be at least 7 years old to visit this spa, with the exception of the saunas. The minimum age for using Caracalla's saunas is 14 years.
A single 3-hour admission ticket excluding soap and brush massage (3 hours) at the Roman-Irish Friedrichsbad Spa costs 21 Euros, and a three and a half hour session including soap and brush massage costs about 29 Euros. The Friedrichsbad is considered the classiest day spa in the region and combines elements of the Roman bathing culture with the Irish traditions of steam heat. The minimum age for visitors is 14 years.
Many of the region’s hotels, such as Brenner’s Hotel and Spa have spas on site. Some of the other hotels in the area offer spa packages, including wellness packages and spa visits. Spas and fountains in the region rely on the city’s 23 natural springs for their water source. The area’s spas focus on both health and beauty and offer a wide variety of spa services including facials, wraps, massages, saunas, steam rooms, and other hydrotherapy sessions.

Baden Baden is famous for its locally produced wines, which originate in the Rebland. Southwest of Baden Baden, Rebland is a picturesque, sun blessed vineyard region with splendid views of the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest. Rebland is also close to the region’s casinos and parks.

Baden Baden is considered a spa resort town with a trove of architectural wonders, wineries, sporting events, and an abundance of parks. In the famous spa park, the Lichtentaler Allee runs for several kilometres from the pump room to Lichtental Convent and snakes past the area's neo-baroque theatre. The old quarter district is full of exclusive boutiques and cafés. In addition to a number of local museums and historical dwellings such as the Brahms House, the Roman bath ruins offer fascinating insights into the ancient bathing culture inherent to the region. Visiting the municipal museum in the Alleehaus is said to be like walking through 2,000 years of Baden-Baden history.
